Fed: Psychologists concerned over detention conditions

A group of clinical psychologists say conditions in Australia's detention centres couldcondemn some asylum seekers to years of mental trauma.

Dr SUSAN BALLINGER, the chairwoman of the Australian Psychological Society's collegeof clinical psychologists, says its 1,200 members remain concerned about holding asylumseekers in harsh and remote environments like Woomera for extended periods.

Dr BALLINGER says the government needs to be aware of what conditions like that cando to people who have already been threatened in their lives.

She says a proportion of asylum seekers could suffer for years after experiencing theconditions reported to prevail in the camps.

Dr BALLINGER says evidence-based researched shows children and adolescents are particularlyvulnerable to emotionally-crippling post-traumatic stress syndromes.

She says a representative from the college would be more than willing to discuss theissues with immigration minister PHILIP RUDDOCK.
