Vic: A mother of four dies tragically during fifth birth

MELBOURNE, Jan 20 AAP - A 34-year-old mother of four died while under anaesthetic during
the birth of her fifth child, Melbourne coroners court heard today.

Alison Douglas, of Eildon, was 12 days overdue when she was admitted to Alexandra District
Hospital in central Victoria on January 14, 1997.

Her general practitioner, Dr Chris Pearce, said he decided to induce labour using a
syntocinon infusion, but no contractions resulted.

"I decided to stop the infusion, subject to consultation with Box Hill Obstetric unit,"
